1945, Hiroshima – Japan

On August 6th 1945, the American army dropped the world’s first nuclear bomb on the city of Hiroshima.

Among the 95,000 to 166,000 victims, around 75,000 died when the bomb exploded on their city. The others, exposed to nuclear radiations, died a few month later to what they called radiation sickness.

Headaches, diarrhea, hemorrhage or even loss of hair: They only had a few month, or weeks, to live.

After living the worst nightmare of their lives, they would suffer until death would take their last breath.

While looking around the museum of peace, you can hear testimonies of people who survived to the explosion and, among them, a woman talking about her inanimate daughter she had in her arms. Distressed, saddened and unable to understand what clearly had happened, she asked the doctor why her daughter was so cold and why she did not move. She was so shocked the doctor could only tell her to try to warm up her daughter…

The reason no one understood why Americans bombed Hiroshima was that the city had not suffered any bombing until now; the planes only flew upon it. That is why when the bomber flew over the city, the bombing alert only rung for 19 minutes. The bomb was dropped around 45 minutes later, at 8:16. The main reason American did not drop any bomb on Hiroshima until now is horrifying: the American army wanted to see what results would give this new type of bomb on a “clean” city. On a city that never suffered from the war.

The only stone survivor of the bomb is the Genbaky Dome, which was the Industrial Exibition Center of the Hiroshima region. Nowadays, the Genbaku Dome is the symbol that war is an atrocity that have to stop.
